Weekend Sports Report

Dorchester rugby club entertained the Tribute Southern Counties South league leaders Wimborne at Coburg Road on Saturday and despite a slow start when they conceded a try inside the first minute and struggled to compete with the intensity of the visitor’s game trailing their guests by 10 points to 26 at the break they rallied in the second half and scored 17 unanswered points to lead the game mid-way into the second period by 27 points to 26.

Now matching the visitors at the break down and keeping them penned inside their own 22, Wimborne began to infringe that resulted in the referee issuing two yellow cards to the visitors, however despite this when back to a full complement and against the run of play Wimborne ran in two late tries in quick succession against a tiring Dorchester side to secure victory and tighten their grip on the league title with a 38 points to 27 victory.

In the same division Swanage & Wareham beat Blandford at Larksmead by 57 points to 16.

In Tribute Dorset & Wilts Division 1 Lytchett Minster beat Oakmeadians by 20 points to 15 which virtually assures Weymouth & Portland who had no game over the weekend the League Championship.

Also, in Dorset & Wilts División 1 South Dorset Dockers won at home against Puddletown by 38 points to 5 and Swanage & Wareham Extra First xv were beaten by 40 points to 62 at Bestwall by Bridport.

In the local football it was what should have been at the Bob Lucas Stadium where Bradley Ash missed a second half penalty that would have secured the Terras 3 National League South points and ease their relegation worries a little, so Weymouth had to make do with 1 point against promotion chasing St Albans with the game ending goalless.

Dorchester didn’t fare much better at the Avenue Stadium where they went down by 2 goals to 1 against visitors Bracknell Town, the Magpies score came from Shaq Gwengwe.

Portland ran out 4 nil winners at Grove Corner against Wessex League opposition Pagham the Blues goals coming courtesy of Liam Sayers, debutant Baily Rowe, George Stuttle and Greg Borthwick.

In South Wset Peninsular East Bridport travelled to Elburton Villa and went down by 2 goals to1 their only score coming from Fred Parsons.

On Sunday afternoon the Weymouth Football Club’s women’s football team travelled to title chasing Frome and despite holding their hosts right up to the 84th minute when they conceded from a corner then again 3 minutes later to eventually loose the game by 2 goals to nil.
