Weekend Sports Report

Only one of our local football clubs emerged from the weekend’s fixtures with any degree of success and that was Bridport who beat Newton Abbot Spurs at St Mary’s by 3 goals to 2 in a Southwest Peninsular East match.

The Bees’ scores coming from Solomon Ayunga, Tom Richardson and George Claverley.

In their opening National League South game Weymouth travelled to play one of the teams tipped for promotion, St Albans City and came very close to returning to the Bob Lucas Stadium with a point.

However, it was not to be when the home keeper saved a late penalty from striker Tom Bearwish who had already netted for the Terras and that would have levelled the scores at 2 goals each, but they had to settle for 2 goals to 1 defeat.

In the Southern Premier league Dorchester crossed the Severn Bridge to play Merthyr Town and probably deserved to gain at least a point, but they went down by the odd goal losing by 3 goals to 2 and returned to Dorset with nothing.

Portland United’s flirtation with the FA Cup this season lasted just 90 minutes at Horndean where they lost by 3 goals to nil.

Manager Kyle Critchell was not impressed when the referee awarded Horndean a penalty kick for handball and said after the game, ““We played really well. I will raise it, because it’s cost us, (the penalty) is a decision that in my opinion shouldn’t have happened. It’s changed the game”.

In a friendly fixture the Terras Under 23 squad lost 2 nil at Chertsey.

Cricket results:

Portland Red Triangle were beaten at St George’s by 109 runs by Whichampton, Weymouth beat Compton House by 58 runs at Redlands & Abbotsbury lost at Royal Challengers Sports Club by 2 wickets.

All other Dorset league matches were either cancelled or abandoned.
