Weekend Sports Report

Portland United were our only local club to emerge victorious on Saturday when they beat visitors United Services Portsmouth by the narrowest of margins one nil in the first round of the FA Vase at Grove Corner, the Blues only goal coming from Greg Borthwick.

Also in the Vase Bridport were beaten three two at St Mary’s by visitors Hamble.

After the game the Bees chairman Adrian Scadding said: “We had 15 players unavailable for selection this week for various reasons, but in saying that we still created enough chances to have won the tie and it was a late penalty that cost us the result, so at least we can now concentrate on extending our 100% winning record in the league”.

Bridport’s goals came from Riley Weedon and Fred Parsons.

Weymouth entertained one of the National League South’s promotion favorites Chelmsford City, losing three nil at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The Terras finished the game with only 10 players on the park following the dismissal of Anthony Cheshire in the 93rd minute of the game after receiving a second yellow card.

Weymouth striker Brandon Goodship was unlucky early in the first half when he saw his drive strike the woodwork and bounce clear.

Freddie Hockey opened the visitor’s account to make the score one nil at the break, then second-half goals for Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and a penalty by Callum Jones that beat home custodian Gerard Benfield who has already saved one spot kick was enough to see City take the points back to Essex.

Our Man at the Match said: Chelmsford were by far the better team. If they continue with this form, they will definitely be in and around the promotion places at the end of the season. They never eased off and were well organized in all departments and very dangerous on the break”.

“For me my Weymouth Man of the Match was keeper Benfield, not only did he save a penalty, but made a number of heroic saves and without him the Terras’ would have lost by a much greater margin”.

In the Southern League Dorchester failed again at the Avenue Stadium losing two nil against Chesham.

The visitors had Connor Roberts sent off in the 67th minute after he appeared to strike out at Magpie striker Olaf Koszela, but even with a man advantage Dorchester failed to trouble the scoreboard operator.

They did have a big penalty appeal denied when trailing by one goal to nil when Lewis Waterfield went over in the box, but it was not to be.

Friday evening Weymouth & Portland rugby club played a pre-season game away against Lytchett Minster.

The Seahorses’ coach Rich Bament said: “It was a good workout against a strong side, but now we look forwards to our opening league game next Saturday at Avonvale”.

The match was drawn 17 points each.
