Weymouth toilet block reopens after major refurbishment

Toilet facilities in Weymouth’s Cove Street reopened on Monday 31st March following a full refurbishment.

The block has been totally refitted, and improvements include: moving the accessible toilet door so that it is more accessible, new urinals and toilets have been installed which are fed from the mains supply meaning more efficient use of water, sensor flushes and sensor taps installed along with LED lighting to make the facilities a lot lighter than before, as well as being more energy efficient. And a better ventilation system has also been installed.

There is a charge of 50 pence to use the new toilets, with an electronic card reader installed so that payment can be made using a bank card or smartphone. Anyone using a Radar key can continue use the accessible toilet for free.

Final checks were made over the weekend, with the new facilities stocked with loo rolls and hand soap and given a final clean before the brand-new facility officially opened to the public today.

Cllr Matt Bell, Chair of Environment and Services Committee, said: “I’m pleased that the upgraded public toilet block at Cove Street near Hope Square has reopened ahead of the Easter holiday, when more people will be out and about in Weymouth. The entire toilet block has been revamped, and the facilities are much improved.

“The 50 pence charge to use the facilities has been introduced to assist with the ongoing maintenance and cleaning costs involved in keeping all the town’s public toilets clean and in good working order for members of the public to use. A card reader has been installed to allow payment to be made using a bank card or smartphone. People who need to use the accessible toilet can continue to do so free of charge.”

The old toilets were closed at the end of September last year for the total refit to take place. In recent weeks, final snagging works have taken place before the toilets were ready to be reopened in the spring.
