Ninety minutes of the game had elapsed at Cherrywood Road, and Dorchester Football Club’s season was all but over.
The Magpies trailed by one goal to nil at the break to Curtis Angell’s 36th-minute strike that had put Hungerford into the lead, and their playoff rivals, Havant and Waterlooville, were winning at home against Wimborne.
In the 65th minute and for the second week running, former Bournemouth midfielder Wes Fogden was upended in the penalty box and up stepped Olaf Koszela to convert the penalty and level the score.
As the game went into overtime and with the referee checking his watch, he awarded Dorchester a corner the ball curled towards the far post where Will Spetch rose like a salmon to fire a bullet header into the back of the Boro net and send the Magpies players coaches and fans into hysterics so much so that the referee flashed the red card at manager Tom Killick for failure to control his bench.
With no further scoring, it means that on Wednesday evening Dorchester travel to the Testwood Stadium for their Southern Premier League promotion playoff match against the Stags of AFC Totton.
Weymouth’s National League South campaign ended with a whimper at the Bob Lucas Stadium, losing by 6 goals to 1 to visitors Chelmsford City, Malachi Linton scoring the Terras’ goal.
Now, Weymouth manager Warren Feeney has to decide which of the current squad to retain and who to release as he contemplates next season in the Southern Premier League.
On Sunday, the Dorset & Wilts Under 20 rugby squad played their Berkshire counterparts at Salisbury in the first round of the Jason Leonard County Under Championship.
Leading by 17 points to 14 at halftime, the Twin Counties lost control in the second half and trailed by 33 points to 27 with just a minute of the game remaining.
All was not lost, and from a quickly taken tap penalty just a few meters shy of the visitor’s line and the Dorset & Wilts forwards bulldozed their way across the Berkshire line but failed to ground the ball, and the referee blew to end the game.
