Weekend Sports Report

Dorset & Wilts senior men’s rugby team played their final Bill Beaumont Pool 3 match against Surrey at Bestwall Park, Wareham on Saturday and with half an hour gone, they had raced into a 33 points to nil lead and seemed to be cruising into an easy victory.

However, Surrey had other ideas and scored two tries in quick succession to make the score 33 points to 14 at the break.

The second half kicked off with the visitors surging forwards yet again, but a breakaway try for the Twin Counties put the result beyond Surrey’s reach. Both teams made numerous substitutions after the break, which seemed to disrupt the game’s tempo. And it descended into a stop-start encounter with little flowing rugby, but Dorset & Wilts fully deserved their victory, which should see them receive a home venue in the semi-final.

Scorers. Trys, Reece Makin, Weymouth & Portland 2. Tom Stewart, North Dorset 2. Will Hendy, Chippenham. James Kennedy, North Dorset. Alex Salah, Chippenham. Harry Daynes, Royal Wootton Bassett. Rylie Lewis, North Dorset.

Rhys Floyd Royal Wootton Bassett 7 conversions.

Also over the weekend, spectators enjoyed top-level gig racing, as the Weymouth Regatta took place. Weymouth Regatta committee chairman Liam Patton said “Providing the weather is with us, I believe we will be in for the most exciting two days of racing I think Weymouth will have ever hosted.”

Saturday saw over 600 rowers battle it out in the Mixed Grand Prix, while on Sunday there was racing from men’s, ladies and junior crews with clubs from the local Jurassic League and other top clubs competing to win the Tristan Johnson Cup.
