Plans to convert former restaurant in Lower Bockhampton approved

by Trevor Bevins, Local Democracy Reporter.

Plans for a restaurant conversion in Lower Bockhampton have been approved by Dorset Council.

Two linked applications for Yalbury Cottage, on Bockhampton Lane in Lower Bockhampton, have been granted allowing internal and external alterations to convert the long‑established restaurant into a private residence, while existing guest rooms will be repurposed as AirBnB-style accommodation.

The owners have recently decided to retire from the restaurant business after years of being rated one of the best in the area.

In neighbouring Higher Bockhampton, Dorset Council has approved proposals for works at Henchard, part of the Greenwood Grange complex, close to Thomas Hardy’s Cottage. The application allows the replacement of a thatched roof with slate tiles and installation of six rooflights.

The move marks a notable change for a property in an area known for its traditional thatched buildings.

In nearby West Stafford investigative works will take place at the village’s sewage pumping station. Dorset Council has accepted the plans for trial hole excavations, classifying associated tree works as acceptable within the conservation area.
