Southern Premier League Fixture.
Weymouth nil vs Dorchester Nil, at the Bob Lucas Stadium Weymouth.
Two teams desperate for points to retain their places in the division, Dorchester more so than Weymouth produced a goalless draw, but neither squad of players could be faulted for their lack of commitment, just lack of quality, particularly in front of goal.
The ball spent as much time in the air as it did on the grass, and what did probably the greatest ever English club manager Brian Clough say, “If God had wanted us the play football in the air he would have put grass up there for us to play on”.
Both teams went close to breaking the deadlock, midway through the first half the Terras’ left-wing Matt Burrows found himself inside the penalty area and in front of goal with most of it unguarded, but Burrows managed to scoop the ball straight at the Magpies goalkeeper Gerard Benfield and then after the break the Magpies Marcus Daws struck free kick around the Terras’ wall that seemed to be heading into the net until Weymouth custodian Max Evans managed to push the ball around post to safety.
On the hour the game boiled over with a handbags at dawn incident and players of both teams squaring up, but the referee quickly regained control.
The fans were segregated but it kicked off for a couple of minutes with fans from both clubs goading each other. The match stewards and police re-enforced the segregation, and it quickly quietened down.
In the end the points were shared one apiece leaving Weymouth in 16th place in the league table and Dorchester inside the drop zone in 20th with both clubs having 3 matches remaining.
