Russian tanker intercepted by Royal Marines and anchored off Weymouth

Idris Martin reporting.

British armed forces boarded the oil tanker Smyrtos, which is thought to be one of the Russian Shadow Fleet in the English Channel, on early Sunday morning, the Prime Minister said.

“The ship is now anchored in Weymouth Bay and is being monitored for any environmental or safety concerns”.

The UK-led operation consisted of, Royal Marine commandos and specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency, who boarded the oil tanker during a six-hour operation.

According to the MoD, the operation was assisted by aircraft from the Maritime Air Group (Chinooks, Merlin Mk4 and Wildcat), an RAF P-8 aircraft, and HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury.
