High West Street changes

Trevor Bevins, Local Democracy Reporter.

Changes and improvements continue to properties in Dorchester’s High West Street.

The road was once mainly substantial family homes which, over the years, became offices mainly for solicitors and estate agents. In recent years the trend has reversed, the business users moving out, and the properties once again being use for accommodation.

Two properties in the road feature in the latest planning applications to Dorset Council.

At Savernake House, 42 High West Street, application P/LBC/2026/04152 seeks listed building consent for repairs to roofs, a chimney and a dormer window.

Nearby, proposals for 62 Stable Cottage, High West Street, under P/HOU/2026/03833, include refurbishment and improvement works, a new entrance porch, replacement rear garden room extension, internal alterations, fire safety upgrades, conservation rooflights, Juliet balcony guarding, a replacement wood burning stove and a new rear access gate and steps.

Other householder applications in the town include a first floor rear extension and external ground floor alterations at 7 Little Britain under P/HOU/2026/04009, a garden office at 22 Alington Road under P/HOU/2026/04234, and a two-storey side extension with single-storey rear extension at 24 Alington Road under P/HOU/2026/04168.

Listed building works are also proposed at 1 Glyde Path Road, where P/LBC/2026/03915 covers re-rendering of the south gable and additional lead flashings and weatherings to the chimney stack.

Further Dorchester applications include porch and garage roof alterations with a rear lean-to extension at 18 Kingsbere Crescent under P/HOU/2026/03703, a single-storey rear extension and window alterations at 41 Queens Avenue under P/HOU/2026/04010, and a pergola at 17 Garland Crescent under P/HOU/2026/04167.
