After a summer of exciting tennis, the Jurassic Tennis Ladder came to thrilling end. On Sunday 13th September the top 4 finishing players battled it out, playing semi finals and then a final.
The first Semi saw young Matthew Barrett go up against John Samuelson. Samuelson made strong start breaking Barrett in the first game. Barrett started to grow into the match and ended up with a composed 6-1 6-1 victory to secure his place in the final. The other Semi saw champion of the last 2 years Steve White go up against Clive Stow. White played the more consistent patient game and although Stow played some great tennis White’s steady game came through to secure a 6-1 6-3 victory.
In the final, White, as always played a very consistent game, and Barrett struggled to get into the match, with his nerves getting the better of him, seeing him lose the first set 6-2. In the second set Barrett composed himself and started to play more attacking tennis, and after getting an early break, overcame White to win the set 6-4. The deciding set saw Barrett play similar to the second set, and although White pushed him all the way Barrett managed to fight back to win the match, 2-6 6-4 6-4.
This years ladder has been highly contested with over 160 matches being played, giving over 20 people the chance to play competitive tennis, many for the first time.
One new member of the ladder said “it has been a great opportunity to play some competitive tennis, in a friendly environment. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to play again next year”.
