Water refill points are popping up in new locations in the Wessex Water region, including Weymouth and Dorchester.
Three new units in Hope Square, Esplanade and Alexandra Gardens have now been switched on for Weymouth residents and visitors to enjoy, with a fourth in New Bond Street also installed and due to be ready soon.
South Street in Dorchester also has a new tap water point up and running – perfect timing as World Refill Day on Wednesday (16 June) highlights the importance of avoiding single-use plastic bottles.
Wessex Water is working with councils and businesses across its supply region to install refill points in public spaces.
Rigorously tested before they are switched on, the units are cleaned and maintained regularly to ensure the highest standards of water quality and hygiene.
A staggering 7.7 billion plastic bottles are used every year in the UK. Despite being labelled ‘recyclable’, a large amount of them end up in landfill and waterways where they harm the environment and wildlife.
Kirsty Scarlett, Wessex Water’s head of community engagement, told KeeP 106: “Our refill points have been installed in great locations for keeping people hydrated.
“If you see one in your area or on your travels, try topping up with tap water for free instead of buying bottled water.
“We’re pleased to be able to work with so many local communities who share the same aim of promoting refill over landfill.”
Wessex Water refill points have either been installed or are coming soon at the following locations (please note that some are not yet in operation):
- Hope Square, Weymouth
