Weymouth RNLI Inshore lifeboat was tasked by Solent Coastguard to investigate reports of a lone yachtsman requiring medical assistance.
Apparently a 74-year-old lone yachtsman had sustained a head injury shortly after setting sail from Portland heading for Gosport. He decided to anchor his yacht close to the North entrance to Portland Harbour at approx. 7am on the morning of Tuesday 10th August and to self-administer first aid.
The Inshore lifeboat was launched at 11.40am and was on scene shortly after at 12.05pm. After boarding the yacht, one of the volunteer lifeboat crew who is trained in casualty care decided that although he was deemed to be walking wounded, he should still be checked out at hospital. He was taken onto the lifeboat and brought back to Weymouth lifeboat station to wait for an ambulance. He was eventually taken to Dorset County Hospital for treatment at 1.30pm.
Staff from Portland Port dealt with the yacht while Wyke Coastguard CRT team were also on scene at the lifeboat station.
