Please note, applications have now closed.

Original story:

How would you like to take on a lively jive, a stylish American Smooth, or a sultry salsa?

Weldmar Hospicecare is looking for local people to sign up for their fifth Strictly Ballroom show, which takes place next March at Weymouth Pavilion.

Eight men and eight women will be paired up and taught a ballroom or Latin routine that they will perform at the show, which raises money for the Dorset charity. Each couple will receive sixteen weeks of free training from the experts at the Eileen Spracklen School of Dancing.

The show includes a panel of judges, but the winner is decided by votes from the audience.

Local men in particular are being encouraged to put their best foot forward and apply to take part.

Tracey Gent from Weldmar’s fundraising team says, “Strictly Ballroom has been one of our most popular events ever since we held the first show in 2013, and this will be the first one we’ve been able to put on since the pandemic. We always have lots of interest from local ladies, so we’re asking men to step up and balance up the numbers!

“It’s such a fun event, and everyone who has taken part in it has loved it. Our previous show in 2018 raised a brilliant £23,000.”

Daniel Smy won the competition with his partner Sandra Wayman in 2015, and says, “It was absolutely thrilling, the whole night was quite special! The feeling of excitement was beyond what anyone could imagine. Have a go – it’s something you will really enjoy, it’s great to learn to dance, and above all you’ll have an amazing time.”

To register your interest in Weldmar’s Strictly Ballroom, visit weldmarhospicecare.org or call the fundraising team in office hours on 01305 261800.
