Lest We Forget. Both Weymouth & Portland and Blandford rugby teams observe a minute silence as a mark of respect for the fallen before their match kicks off at Monmouth Avenue on Saturday.
For the second week in succession, the Weymouth Football Club’s long-serving wing-back Calvin Brooks saved the blushes of his manager Mark Molesley, scoring the equalizer in the 86th minute of the game after the visitors, St Albans, had taken a goal-to-nil lead 22 minutes earlier through striker Ken Charles.
However, the 1 goal apiece stalemate does not affect the league standings as both clubs remain in the National League South drop zone. The Terras are in 22nd place, and the Saints are just 1 place above.
A footnote late in the second half, Molesley was sent into the stand by the referee, and not for the first time this season.
Our Man at the Match said: “It was end to end, and it was up to the Weymouth goalkeeper Will Buse to keep the Terras in the game, I thought Weymouth had a couple of good shouts for a penalty kick, but the referee didn’t agree, so I suppose a draw is a fair result”.
In the Southern Premier League, Dorchester travelled to Bracknell and ended up playing against only 9 men as two of the Robins’ players had been red-carded. Still, despite this, the Magpies couldn’t make the best of their numerical advantage, and the game ended up a 1-all draw.
Bracknell opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Joel Rollinson, with former Bournemouth star Wes Fogden netting the equalizer for Dorchester in the 79th minute, and there was no further scoring.
Portland United visited Hythe & Dibden and returned to Grove Corner with a share of the Wessex Premier League spoils, with the final result being Hythe & Dibden 2 vs Portland United 2.
The Blues scores came courtesy of Maxwell Buckler and Gavin Borthwick.
Bridport hosted Crediton at St. Marys’ in the Southwest Peninsular League East and recorded 6 goals to 3-victory.
James Cox netted a hat trick for the Bees, with Fred Parsons, Solomon Ayunga and Brad Rowe chipping in with a goal each.
On Sunday, Weymouth Football Club’s women’s team travelled to Honiton and returned with all 3 league points in the bank.
Emily Screen netted twice, with Kaydee Thornicroft scoring the Terras Ladies 3rd, making the final score Honiton 2 vs Weymouth 3.
Dorchester Football Club’s Ladies squad hosted Ridgeway Ladies and won the game by 4 goals to 3.
Harriet Freeman banked a brace of goals for the Magpies with Lucy Pubrick and Eliza Allford netting a goal each.
In the Tribute Rugby Leagues, Dorchester went down at Coburg Road by 17 points to 24 against Walcot, and Swanage & Wareham lost away at Salisbury, beaten by 21 points to 10, both in the Southern Counties division.
In the Dorset & Wilts Leagues, Weymouth & Portland made a disastrous start against Blandford and trailed by 10 points to nil after 5 minutes. However, the Seahorses sorted out their problems and eventually ran out victors by 40 points to 26. In the same division, Bridport went down a Brewery Field by 22 points to 35 against Wimborne’s second team.
Also on Sunday, Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club’s women’s team won their home game against Eastleigh, beating their guests by 36 points to 17.
It is with great sadness that Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club can report the passing of one of their former players, prop forward Dennis Harvey.
Dennis had one claim to fame, that playing so many matches for the Seahorses, he only ever scored 1 try despite turning out for the club throughout the 1960’s 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and into the early 2000’s, and he was presented with the match ball in the bar after the game.
The Harvey family have invited any former teammates of Dennis who would like to attend his funeral, it will be held at St Aldhams church Spa Road on Tuesday the 19th of November at 2:00 pm.
