Weekend Sports Report

Relegation-threatened Weymouth Football Club’s senior men’s team belatedly found some form on Saturday at the Bob Lucas Stadium, where they overcame the challenge of their National League South promotion chasing guests Boreham Wood, beating their visitors by 2 goals to 1.

Dorchester hosted Chertsey Town at the Avenue Stadium and sent them back to Surrey on the wrong end of a 1-nil defeat, with the Magpies striker Shaquille Gwengwe scoring the game’s only goal.

Portland United also won by a 1-nil scoreline at Grove Corner against Laverstock & Ford, with Jacob Coombes netting for the Blues.

Bridport travelled into Devon to lock horns with Teignmouth and returned to Dorset with all 3 Southwest Peninsular League East points in the bank following their 3 goals to 1 victory.

Riley Weedon, Fred Parsons and Kieran Coombs all netted a goal apiece for the Bees.

Women’s Rugby:

Weymouth & Portland Shehorses travelled to Bournemouth to play Oakmeadians Women’s team and went down by 27 points to 10.

The Dorset & Wilts Under 18 Girls County team overcame the challenge of their Buckinghamshire counterparts at North Dorset Rugby Club, outscoring their opponents by 51 points to 36.

On Sunday morning, over 1400 runners, some serious athletes and also some fun runners, took to the streets around Weymouth for the town’s annual half marathon starting and finishing at the Pavilion Theatre.

The first man home was Thomas Corbin from Poole, who recorded a personal best time of 1 hour 11 minutes and 25 seconds, with Polly James from Bristol taking the Women’s crown in a time of 1 hour 23 minutes and 52 seconds.
