Major changes have been approved at Littlemoor Youth Centre in Louviers Road, Weymouth including external canopies and internal alterations as part of a six-figure refurbishment of the ageing building.
The plans include new and replacement doors and windows, a canopy over the main entrance and a separate canopy for an outdoor seating area, alongside a serving hatch.
They also show a two-metre-high secure external enclosure, three air-source heat pumps, a new path and landscaping. The building is already used as both a youth centre and a Family Hub for the area.
Detailed plans include activity rooms, space for children’s services, a commercial kitchen, a smaller kitchenette and a clinic room.
The application describes the work as: “Refurbishment and partial alteration of an existing building, including internal reconfiguration, new and replacement doors and windows, entrance & café external canopies, 2m high rear secure enclosure, installation of air source heat pumps, and associated landscaping works.”
Weymouth Town Council welcomed the proposal, telling Dorset Council, which determined the application: “The Town Council strongly supports this application, which is welcome in an area of deprivation, and is a welcome facility for young people. The addition of heat pumps is also positive.”
Ward councillor Peter Dickenson said: “Speaking as a trustee we have been waiting a while for this news, and we are thrilled as it will mean all the ideas and projects we have will now be a huge possibility. We hope the building work will be completed as soon as possible.”
