Dorset continues to stand with Ukraine four years on from the start of the war

Dorset Council reaffirms support for Ukrainians four years on from the start of the war.

Four years on from the start of the war in Ukraine, Dorset Council continues to stand with Ukrainians living in the county and is asking residents to consider whether they could offer a safe home as a host.

To mark the anniversary on 24 February, the Ukrainian flag was flown over County Hall as a symbol of solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

This gesture mirrored events taking place across the UK, where communities gathered to remember those who have lost their lives and to recognise the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

Since 2022, Dorset has welcomed 1,143 Ukrainians seeking safety. Of these, 712 guests remain in the county, with:

  • 175 currently living in hosted accommodation
  • 537 now settled in rented homes
  • 26 more expected to arrive in the near future

Dorset Council continues to seek new host families — both to sponsor new arrivals and to support re‑matching where existing hosting arrangements are coming to an end.

Cllr Ryan Hope, Cabinet Member for Customer, Culture and Community Engagement, said:

“Four years on, the war in Ukraine continues to have a big impact on individuals and families who have been forced to leave their homes.

“Dorset’s residents have shown remarkable generosity in offering safety, stability and kindness to those arriving in our county.

“As we mark this anniversary, we want to reaffirm our commitment to supporting Ukrainian guests for as long as they need our help. We continue to ask anyone who can offer a home to consider becoming a host.”
