In this programme:

Managing Director of the Gardens Group Mike Burks talks about the amazing and ancient tree species, the Wollemi Pine, from Australia, a specimen of which is growing in Sherborne’s Pageant Garden – and this particular one carries a lovely story.

Horticulturist and conservationist Andrew Pearson from Milborne Port plans to expand the number of wildlife-friendly gardening practices in West Dorset, starting with town gardens and expanding into private lands to create wildlife corridors through his Gardeners Wild project – and he also talks about rewilding a 10 acre ancient quarry in west Devon.

Gareth Flux is a beekeeper who works for The Dorset Bee, and he will be talking about “natural” beekeeping – what that is and what it involves – and about how one of the important roles of the Dorset Bee is to educate children about the importance of bees.

And Professor Francis Ratnieks is the country’s only Professor of Apiculture, and he has been studying honeybees in particular for many years, both in England and abroad. He talks about ‘beelining’, about wild bee nest sites, and how the honeybee is faring.
