In this edition:
One of the hot topics these days is water pollution from sewage, both treated and untreated, and the deluges of the last few months have made this an acute problem. Matt Wheeldon of Wessex Water talks about what he considers to be the main issues for water companies in England. He also gives the reaction of water companies to a recent Channel 4 docu-drama series, “Dirty Business”, which was about sewage pollution.
Professor Alex Ford, a water and marine specialist from Portsmouth University takes a different stance to Matt Wheeldon, and explains what he considers to be the fundamental problems with the matter of sewage overflow into England’s water systems – and he gives a synopsis of that same Ch.4 series.
and finally, on a completely different subject, Dr. Sophie Rasmussen, known everywhere as “Dr. Hedgehog” tells us about recent research into hedgehog hearing – which is on a par with that of another nocturnal animal, the bat. She talks about hoping to devise high-frequency devices to try and reduce the numbers of hedgehogs killed by cars and by robotic lawnmowers! She also talks about what you can find out from looking at the DNA in hedgehog poo!
