Barclays Bank Dorchester branch to get an upgrade

by Trevor Bevins, Local Democracy Reporter.

A Dorchester bank is to get an upgrade with a range of internal improvements.

The Barclays Grade 2 listed South Street building is identified as the Mayor’s house in Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge.

The bank has submitted a listed building application to Dorset Council for internal alterations at the 10 South Street premises, (reference P/LBC/2026/02258).

The proposal seeks permission to remove the existing self‑service machines and install two new self‑service teller machines, along with updated internal signage, new flooring and refreshed decoration. According to the application, the works are intended to improve customer experience and enhance the functionality of the self‑service banking area.

The plans says that the layout has been refined to improve customer flow, accessibility and privacy. The design also aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency through upgraded technologies while ensuring that the historic character of the listed building is respected, according to the application.

The application to the council states: “This design proposal provides a carefully considered internal refresh that respects the architectural quality of the Grade II listed within Dorchester Conservation Area. The design approach prioritises reversibility, subtlety, and operational improvement while ensuring the building’s heritage significance is preserved.”

The full details can be found on the council website using the reference P/LBC/2026/02258 with the proposals open for public comment.
