Dorset Museum & Art Gallery is launching a recruitment drive to expand its volunteer team, seeking individuals to support its permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions.
The Museum welcomes approximately 46,000 visitors annually, many of them tourists experiencing Dorset for the first time. The quality of the visitor experience – whether guests feel welcomed, discover something unexpected, and want to return – depends significantly on the people who greet them in the galleries.
The timing of the recruitment drive comes as the Museum was recently shortlisted for the Visitor Welcome Award at the Museums & Heritage Awards, recognising the impact of both staff and volunteers in creating welcoming experiences.
Cecilia Rego, Operations Manager at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, said: “Our volunteers are vital to everything we do. They help create an engaging environment where visitors can explore and connect with Dorset’s heritage. This recruitment drive will allow us to expand the support available to our visitors and strengthen the team that makes our galleries such a welcoming place.”
Volunteers will support the Museum’s galleries and exhibitions by welcoming visitors, answering questions about displays and collections, and ensuring visitors have a positive experience. The role contributes directly to the Museum’s mission to help more people explore and enjoy Dorset’s heritage.
The Museum is seeking individuals aged 18 and over with an interest in history, nature, or the arts. No prior museum experience is necessary. The positions are based around afternoon shifts on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
