Young people across Dorset are being invited to unleash their creativity as part of a new community competition to transform a historic telephone kiosk in the heart of Dorchester into an inspiring display celebrating climate action, sustainability and nature. Organised by Dorset Climate Action Network (DCAN), the competition is open to individuals and groups up to the age of 18, with schools encouraged to take part as part of class projects or extracurricular activities.
DCAN recently purchased the iconic red telephone kiosk outside the Shire Hall Museum on High West Street and is looking for imaginative ideas to bring the space to life. Entries could include artwork, sculptures, posters, recycled or upcycled creations, educational displays, interactive features, poetry, slogans, shelving designs, exterior artwork, neon signs or any other innovative concepts that encourage positive action for the environment.
Winning entries will be selected across four age categories – First School, Middle School, Upper School and Sixth Form – with each winner receiving a prize. Selected designs and creations will also be incorporated into the finished installation, giving young people the opportunity to see their work displayed in a prominent public space while helping to inspire residents and visitors to think about climate action.
Giles Watts, Chair of DCAN, said: “We want this telephone box to become a vibrant symbol of hope and positive action for our community. Young people have incredible ideas and creativity, and we’re excited to see how they imagine this unique space. We hope schools, families and community groups across Dorset will get involved and help create something that everyone can be proud of.”
Entries are to be submitted by 17 July, with collection from schools available on that day or during the following week. The competition continues to be open to individuals throughout the summer, and winners will be announced by 31 August. Prizes can be presented at school assemblies, where appropriate.
