First Eco-Uniform Delivery at POWFS

The first orders for The Prince of Wales School in Dorchester’s new Eco-Uniform have now been delivered and the local school children could not be more delighted!

The ‘Green Flag’ Eco-School announced last month that it was to become one of the first schools in the country to offer a more eco-friendly school uniform as part of it’s commitment to the Plastic Free Dorchester Campaign.

The uniform is made in part from recycled plastic bottles. Year 3 pupil Hugo, one of the first to wear the new Eco-Uniform stated, “We all think it’s brilliant! We already do lots at our school to help the environment but the uniform takes it to a whole new level!”

Hugo’s brother, Harlan, said, “The new uniform is really comfy and it looks great”.

Headteacher at The Prince of Wales School, Mr. Gary Spracklen believes the new uniform option made possible through the school’s partnership with local supplier ‘The Embroidery Barn’ sends a strong message – “This isn’t about just a new uniform option, this is about inspiring our children to build a brighter tomorrow. We’ve already had overwhelming interest from our community about our eco-work and we look forward to developing this further in the coming weeks and months”.

Speaking about the new Eco-School Uniform, Rosie from The Embroidery Barn explains, ‘The vision for my sustainable embroidery business is to support schools, businesses, clubs, individuals and anyone who cares about looking after our environment. So when I looked in to how I can contribute towards our local schools eco impact it was obvious that finding a solution to school uniform was where I should start. Mr. Spracklen and the children at the Prince of Wales school have so much motivation and creativity for finding ways to make a difference, it is truly eye opening and so offering an alternative to the usual uniform we provide is awesome!’

Rosie adds, ‘This uniform is made from recycled plastic bottles and we can be sure that the people making these garments have been treated and paid fairly. I can’t wait to see where the Prince of Wales school goes on their mission to look after our corner of Dorset and reduce/reuse/recycle’.

With such inspirational practice, it is perhaps no surprise that The Prince of Wales School has it’s many plaudits.

Following it’s recent inspection visit (June 2018), Her Majesty’s School Inspectorate ‘OFSTED’ wrote the following about the school’s approach, “Leaders have ensured that the school’s engaging curriculum is inspiring pupils to learn. There is a breadth of coverage which is underpinned by numerous opportunities for pupils to develop their writing”, this was further support with the words that, “…teachers look for every opportunity to supplement the curriculum with activities and events that inspire pupils and fire their imagination”.
