POWFS Children are Winners

Local school children from The Prince of Wales School have fought off competition from 42,000 other children to be winners in the 2019 Better Energy School Awards!

The school’s entries ‘Together We Can Change The World’ and ‘What Shall We Do With All This Plastic?’ were jointly declared the Regional Winner in the ‘Totally Creative’ category for Wales and Western England.

As Regional Winners, the school received a cheque for £500 and a special certificate to mark their achievements.

But that’s not all! The school’s ‘Eco Shed’ project was also Runner Up in the Totally Active category, which means that they received a further £250 and another special certificate to mark their achievements!

Speaking about the school’s achievements, Peter Littlewood, Director for The Young People’s Trust for the Environment said, “To become a Regional Winner and a Runner Up too is a considerable achievement. Well done and keep up the great work!”.

Headteacher at The Prince of Wales School, Mr. Gary Spracklen talking about the children’s achievement said, “While it’s nice for our pupils to be recognised in this way, it’s not why we do what we do. The school has long had an eco-ethos at it’s core, long before it was fashionable to be so eco-conscious. Our work with our young people isn’t about one-off moments like winning an award, it’s about inspiring our children every day to build a brighter tomorrow by giving them enhanced opportunities to make a difference”.

With such inspirational practice, it is perhaps no surprise that The Prince of Wales School has it’s many plaudits. Following it’s most recent inspection visit (June 2018), Her Majesty’s School Inspectorate, OFSTED, wrote the following about the school’s approach, “Leaders have ensured that the school’s engaging curriculum is inspiring pupils to learn. There is a breadth of coverage which is underpinned by numerous opportunities for pupils to develop their writing”, this was further supported with the words, “…teachers look for every opportunity to supplement the curriculum with activities and events that inspire pupils and fire their imagination”.
