A man has been sentenced after admitting causing a serious injury collision on the A354 Weymouth Relief Road.
Ben Mykhal Holmes, 31 and of Lytton Road, Bournemouth, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 19 July 2019 after admitting careless driving.
He was disqualified from driving for two years, handed a £650 fine and told he would have to pay £85 in costs and a £65 victim surcharge.
The collision occurred at around 9.10am on Wednesday 24 January 2018.
Holmes was travelling south along the Relief Road in his Ford Transit Connect van and a Vauxhall Zafira with three occupants was driving in the opposite direction.
As the van entered a bend, the vehicle continued in a straight line into the opposing lane giving the driver of the Zafira no chance to take avoiding action.
The driver of the Zafira, a Weymouth woman aged in her 30s, sustained injuries and her two passengers, a man and woman both aged in their 50s and from Weymouth, suffered serious injuries. The woman suffered a number of internal injuries while the male passenger sustained several rib fractures, two punctured lungs and fractures of the upper sternum.
Holmes also required hospital treatment for minor injuries but was discharged later the same day.
Police Sergeant Fern Graham, of the traffic unit, said: Ben Holmes careless driving on 24 January last year resulted in two people sustaining serious physical injuries that will have a long-lasting impact, in addition to the psychological trauma suffered by all three occupants of the Zafira and their families.
This case is yet another demonstration of the need for all motorists to drive carefully and considerately at all times as the consequences of failing to do so can be devastating.
