Potentially hazardous wooden pallet retrieved from sea off Preston Beach

Our reporter Idris Martin reports that a large wooden pallet was spotted drifting in the sea at a place popular with the Blue Tits Swimming Club adjacent the groyne on Preston Beach this morning.

A lady swimming alone in the sea grasped hold of the pallet and directed it towards the shore then passed it over to council workers who removed it and placed it in the back of a pickup.

An on looker said: “A pallet that size could do a significant damage if it struck a swimmer, a windsurfer or kite boarder travelling at speed across the bay, and when you take into consideration that 2700 athletes taking part in the Weymouth Iron Man 25 will be entering the sea on Sunday just a few meters away from where we are now it had to be removed for the safety of all water sports enthusiasts.”
