Weekend Sports Report

Weymouth Football Club could have thrown themselves a lifeline at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday by beating fellow league strugglers Aveley by 4 goals to 1, leaving the Terras 10 points from league safety with 12 matches remaining, but it’s a very tall order.

Manager Warren Feeney axed a 4th player from his squad, and Jordan Maguire-Drew exited the club by mutual agreement.

Malachi Linton scored the first of the Terras’ goals, with Jake McCarthy, Brandon Goodship, and Brooklyn Genesini all adding a goal each.

Our Man at the Match said, “It was an entertaining first half despite the two teams being at the bottom of the league, and the Weymouth players could have dropped their heads when, after taking the lead, they conceded almost immediately. But the team kept plugging away and, in the end, deserved their victory. My Man of the Match, Malachi Linton.”

Dorchester extended their unbeaten Southern Premier League run to 18 at the Avenue Stadium, but the Magpies dropped 2 points at home against Wimborne in the Dorset Magpie Derby, drawing the game a goal each.

Olaf Koszela netting the Dorchester goal.

Portland United’s match at Andover was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, and Bridport went down at St. Mary’s, beaten by visitors Bishop’s Lydeard 1 nil.

John Lloyd

Before Weymouth & Portland’s game at Monmouth Avenue against North Dorset, the Seahorses team, supporters, and guests held a minute of applause as a mark of respect for one of their former players, John Lloyd, who passed away last week.

During his time away from Weymouth, John played for Bracknell Rugby Club.

John, 88, joined the club in the 1950s before moving out of the area and then returning years later.

Following his retirement from playing, John served on the committee in many roles until calling it quits a couple of years ago. He was a regular supporter both in the bar and on the touchline on match days, and he will be sorely missed.
