Weekend Sports Report

Storm Austen decimated the local sport this weekend.

Both Portland United and Bridport’s football games were postponed, and Weymouth and Portland’s rugby match was brought to an early finish in Salisbury with the score Wheatsheaf Cabin Crew 10 points, Weymouth & Portland 5.

The club issued this statement.

FULL TIME UPDATE | Match Abandoned

Unfortunately, today’s match was abandoned with player welfare the overriding concern.

Despite horrendous conditions, with relentless wind and driving rain making play incredibly difficult, the Seahorses showed huge heart, determination and fight from the first whistle.

The conditions became increasingly unsafe, and the decision was made to abandon the game in the interests of player welfare.

In the local Non-League Football, Dorchester suffered an unexpected reverse at home against lowly Slimbridge, going down by 2 goals to nil. Still, Weymouth produced their best display of the season so far to despatch Sholing by 3 goals to 2 at the Bob Lucas Stadium, and now the Terras go into Monday’s draw for the Second-Round Proper of the FA Trophy.

Our Man at the Match said: “In fairness, Weymouth should have scored more than 3 goals. They played some excellent football despite the conditions. When the referee awarded the Boatmen a penalty well into time added, all the Weymouth faithful held their breath until the former Terra Jake McCarthy struck the ball against the crossbar. They could breathe again and celebrate a win against a team from a higher division and added to that both Dorchester and Swindon Supermarine lost, so Weymouth remain on top of the league table.”

Weymouth goal scorers. Mitch Beardmore, Tor Swann & Toby Holmes.
