Merchant Navy Day celebrated at County Hall

This morning, the 1st September, the annual ceremony celebrating the role of our Merchant Navy during, and after, the Second World War was held at the Memorial area outside County Hall in Dorchester. Attending the ceremony, together with members of the public, were members of Weymouth & Portland Merchant Navy and Royal Naval Associations, Weymouth Sea Cadets, the High Sherrif of Dorset and members of Dorset Council and Weymouth Council.

The service was opened with a prayer from the Reverend John Yarrien followed by an introduction by the Chair of Dorset Council, Cllr Val Pothecary. His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, then gave an address. This was followed by a word of thanks from Mr Paul Knapp from the Merchant Navy Association, a closing prayer by the Reverend Yarrien and three cheers from Cllr Pothecary.
