The Borough Gardens, Dorchester is awarded Green Flag status once again

Borough Gardens Dorchester awarded the coveted Green Flag Award as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks

Borough Gardens is one of a record breaking 2,391 in the UK to achieve the award this year. It comes as the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces celebrates its 30th year.

Dorchester’s Mayor Councillor Les Fry said:
“To receive the award again this year is great news. I often visit the gardens and know they are always kept in fabulous condition, which is a testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the team who care for them. It’s their efforts that ensure they are maintained to a high standard for visitors and residents to enjoy.
I was very pleased to meet them again to thank them and to receive the flag which will be formally raised as part of our ever-popular Love Parks Day; a free, fantastic family-orientated day full of fun activities, which this year falls on Thursday 23rd of July. We are so lucky to have the gardens centrally located in Dorchester so people can easily access them to take a walk, sit and relax or to use Borough Gardens House Community Room which is available to hire for meetings.”

Borough Gardens is a busy but peaceful green space for the community in Dorchester, where numerous events are held throughout the year appealing to all tastes. This includes weekly weekend music events, the Dorchester Cider Festival and the yearly carols concert. A full list of summer events can be found on the Borough Gardens Facebook page and on the Discover Dorchester website.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said:

“Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

“Borough Gardens shows what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard. Congratulations to everyone involved!”
