Morrisons EV points proposal

by Trevor Bevins, Local Democracy Reporter.

Weymouth supermarket, Morrisons, is seeking to create eight spaces for charging electric vehicles.

Other changes being requested for the car park, off Dorchester Road, include the installation of two jet wash bays, three valet bays and associated equipment.
All of the new features are proposed to the left of the entrance to the car park, opposite the existing garage.

Supporting documents with the planning application, made by the Motor Fuel Group which operates the garage site, says more EV points are necessary across the country if people are to switch to electric cars.

It says that the latest figures, from January, shows that there were 87,800 public electric vehicle charging devices installed in the UK, an increase of just 1,775 since October 2025. At the current pace, just 116,196 would be installed by 2030, with the target of 300,000 not being met until 30 years later. To meet the target in time, 13,263 chargers would need to be installed each quarter between now and 2030 – approximately a 650% increase over current build rate.

Public comments on the application, P/FUL/2026/02075 , can be made until May 29th.
