Plans for Statue of Dorchester’s Famous Cat Susie to Be Decided On 30 June

Steve Bulley reporting.

A planning application to install a statue of Dorchester’s famous feline, Susie the cat, will go before Dorset Council’s Northern Area Planning Committee on 30 June.

The proposal, submitted under reference P/FUL/2026/01516, seeks permission for a statue depicting Susie on a low plinth outside The Julia’s House Shop in South Street, Dorchester. Councillors are due to consider the application on 30 June at The Exchange, in Sturminster Newton.

Susie has become one of Dorchester’s best-known residents over the years. The friendly tabby cat is a familiar sight around South Street, where she regularly greets shoppers, visitors and local business owners. Her daily wanderings and relaxed nature have made her an unofficial ambassador for the county town, with many people stopping to photograph her or share stories of their encounters.

The proposal to create a statue recognises the remarkable affection that residents and visitors have for the cat, who has achieved something of a celebrity status both locally and beyond. Media coverage of Susie’s adventures has helped turn her into one of Dorset’s most recognisable animals, attracting attention from across the UK and the World.

Supporters of the scheme say it is unusual and heartwarming to celebrate a much-loved community figure while she is still alive and able to enjoy the affection shown towards her. They believe the statue would be a fitting tribute to a cat that has brought happiness to thousands of people and helped create a sense of community in the town centre.

The proposed location outside Julia’s House has been chosen because of its prominent position on South Street and its close association with the area where Susie spends much of her time. If approved, the statue could become a popular attraction for both residents and tourists visiting Dorchester.

Dorset Council has confirmed that the application will be determined by the planning committee in a public meeting, allowing councillors to debate the proposal before making a decision. Residents who have commented on the application have also been invited to attend and, if they wish, register to speak in support of or against the plans. Registered speakers are usually allowed up to three minutes to address committee members.

The committee agenda and officers’ report are expected to be published five working days before the meeting, while the proceedings will also be livestreamed and available online for anyone unable to attend in person.

Public statues are normally reserved for historical figures or individuals being remembered after their deaths, making the proposal to honour a living cat particularly unusual. Supporters argue, however, that Susie’s impact on the community is undeniable. They say she has become part of the identity of Dorchester and that the proposed memorial would celebrate not only one remarkable cat but also the sense of warmth and connection she has inspired among local people.

The committee’s decision on 30 June will determine whether Susie receives a permanent tribute in the heart of Dorchester. Whatever the outcome, the proposal highlights the extraordinary affection the town has for the cat that continues to charm residents and visitors alike.
