Weekend Sports Report

The name Max Evans will remain in Weymouth Football Club’s folk law for many years.

Playing his first game for the Terras since signing on loan from Totton in mid-week not only did he save Joe Parker’s second half spot kick he then topped that by diving high to his left and forcing Charlie Wooding’s free kick around the post and ensure that Weymouth travelled back over the Ridgeway with 3 valuable Southern Premier League points after beating their Dorset rivals Dorchester by 2 goals to 1.

A crowd of over 4000 turned out to support the 2 clubs who are fighting relegation, and it was the Magpies who started better opening the scoring in the 17th minute with a Charlie Wooding flying header.

As the game progressed, Weymouth began to exert some pressure, and it came as no surprise when Tom Bearwish levelled the scores with a strike from the edge of the penalty box.

In the 6th minute of time added Dorchester failed to clear the ball and up stepped Terras’s striker Brandon Goodship to drive it into the back of the Magpies net from 12 yards out.

After the break both teams went close, then a Dorchester player was upended in the box, and the referee awarded the Magpies a penalty.

Joe Parker struck the ball to Evans’ right, but he had guessed correctly and grasped the ball to the delight of the Terras’ fans and coaches.

Weymouth sub, Matt Burrows was adjudged to have fouled a Dorchester striker on the edge of the penalty box, for which he received a yellow card, then Wooding placed the ball and sent it heading into the corner of the Weymouth goal.

Evans saved and it was the Terras’s fans who were celebrating with the players after the final whistle.

Portland United ran out winners at Grove Corner beating visitors Christchurch by 2 goals to 1.

Archie Woolford and Greg Borthwick scoring the Blues goals.

On Boxing Day Bridport hosted Ilminster at St. Mary’s and sent them back on the wrong end of a 5 goals to 1 scoreline.

Luke King, Alec Thomas, Will Gape, Solomon Ayunga and Harley Brook all scoring a goal each for the Bees.
